During an appearance on The View Wednesday, pop star Usher Raymond declined to take part in co-host Joy Behar’s attempt to have him endorse Kamala Harris for president.

Usher opted to steer clear of overt political involvement, leaving Behar and the audience surprised.

The conversation began after Usher discussed his upcoming concert film Rendezvous in Paris.

Behar quickly pivoted the discussion towards politics, specifically urging the singer to speak out against former President Donald Trump and endorse Kamala Harris.

“So, you’re supporting Kamala Harris for president, I understand,” Behar started. Usher responded with a simple “Yes,” prompting applause from the audience. However, when Behar pressed further, trying to get the artist to criticize Trump and emphasize Harris as the better option, Usher refused to engage in divisive political rhetoric.

Behar attempted to push the conversation by referring to the recent presidential debate between Harris and Trump, which Usher admitted he didn’t watch due to a performance. “I always say that artists should come out and speak for Kamala against Donald Trump, because he is an existential threat to the country. What do you say to that?” Behar asked.

In response, Usher downplayed the pressure to make bold political statements. “I don’t get too deep into politics. I didn’t get a chance to watch the debate last night,” he said. “I think voting is an individual choice. You have to look at the reality of the country that we are and the country that we want to be and find the candidate that you feel fits the category of what you wanna be and that’s it. That’s what you vote based off of.”

Usher’s comments reflect a noticeable shift from his past political activism. During the 2008 presidential election, he was an active supporter of Barack Obama, attending events and encouraging voter turnout.

However, his decision to stay neutral on The View may indicate a more reserved stance in today’s politically charged environment.

Interestingly, Usher’s neutral position comes just a day after Taylor Swift endorsed Kamala Harris following the presidential debate.

Swift, like Behar, urged her followers to do their research on the candidates. “If you haven’t already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most,” Swift wrote in an Instagram post.

While Usher chose to avoid direct political confrontation, his decision to emphasize the personal nature of voting suggests a more cautious approach compared to the political endorsements seen from other high-profile celebrities.
