Joe Biden says he will call on Congress with a set of substantial reforms aimed at the Supreme Court, as he takes a stand on term limits, a code of conduct, and limits to presidential immunity, according to his op-ed in The Washington Post.

Biden will expound on these proposed initiatives during a speech on Monday at the LBJ Presidential Library, marking the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, the official commented. The president has also laid out his reform aspirations in an editorial published on Monday morning.

Expressing his extensive experience with the Supreme Court, Biden highlighted his involvement with numerous nominations while serving as a U.S. senator and as vice president. “What is happening now is not normal, and it undermines the public’s confidence in the court’s decisions, including those impacting personal freedoms. We now stand in a breach,” he emphasized in the op-ed, published in the Washington Post.

The proposed reforms by Biden would strip any immunity previously enjoyed by former presidents for any crimes committed during their time in office.

In relation to the Supreme Court, Biden is pushing for a tenure of 18 years for justices, allowing for a once-every-two-years appointment of new justices.

The president is also advocating for a new code of conduct for the Supreme Court, requiring justices to disclose gifts, refrain from public political activity, and withdraw themselves from cases that involve financial or other conflicts of interest involving themselves or their spouses.

A White House official expressed that President Biden and Vice President Harris are eager to collaborate with Congress and reinforce the democracy’s safeguards by reviving faith in the Supreme Court, preventing the abuse of presidential power, and empowering the American people.
