At least 150 people are feared dead in a brutal massacre in central Sudan, allegedly carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group clashing with the army. This violent struggle for control has been ongoing for over 13 months.

The RSF has yet to respond to the accusations but disturbing footage on social media from Wednesday's raid shows dozens of bodies in white shrouds, prepared for burial in Wad al-Nourah, Gezira state. This video was allegedly filmed by activists from a neighborhood resistance committee, part of a nationwide network advocating for a return to civilian rule:

The Madani Resistance Committee reported it is still awaiting a confirmed count of the dead and injured. The details of the massacre remain unclear, with allegations that RSF fighters attacked the village twice on Wednesday. Hafiz Mohamad from Justice Africa Sudan informed the BBC that many people are still missing and counting the dead is challenging due to ongoing RSF presence and looting in the area.

Sudan’s military government has called for international condemnation of the Wad al-Nourah atrocity. The RSF seized control of Gezira state, south of the capital, Khartoum, in December and has been accused of multiple civilian abuses, which they deny. Intense battles between the RSF and military continue in El Fasher, Darfur.

Since the conflict began in April 2023, over 15,000 people are estimated to have been killed. Several peace talks have failed, unable to resolve the war that started when the army and RSF generals fell out. UN agencies report that the fighting has caused the world's largest displacement crisis, with millions facing severe hunger.

Martin Griffiths, the UN’s Under-Secretary General for humanitarian affairs, warned that up to five million people are at risk of famine. “I don’t think we’ve ever had this kind of number at risk of famine,” he said, criticizing the conflict as avoidable. “This is a place where two men chose to resolve their differences through fighting, dragging their country down,” Griffiths added.
