A large sinkhole emerged on a soccer field in Alton, Illinois, located approximately 22 miles from St. Louis, Missouri, on Wednesday, June 26.

 

The event was captured in aerial footage from KMOV, revealing the substantial void left on the athletic field, which even engulfed a stadium light post. Following the incident, officials attributed the sinkhole formation to a suspected collapse of an underground mine at Gordon Moore City Park.

According to estimates provided by Parks and Recreation officials in Alton, the hole spans about 100 feet in width and descends to an approximate depth of 30 feet.

In response to the situation, the park has been closed off as crews conduct assessments to gauge the extent of the damage and develop a plan for rehabilitation.

 

No injuries have been reported in connection with this unexpected occurrence.
