Authorities are investigating after inmates at a regional jail in eastern North Carolina overpowered correctional officers, took hostages, and seized control of the facility for approximately nine hours before law enforcement regained control, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.
The incident unfolded Monday at the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail in Windsor, North Carolina, where officials said inmates overtook the facility after overpowering guards.
Authorities have not disclosed how many inmates participated in the takeover, but officials said only three correctional officers were on duty overseeing 88 inmates when the incident began.

According to officials, the situation started at approximately 5 a.m. and continued until about 2 p.m.
The prolonged standoff prompted a large law enforcement response involving local, state, and federal agencies.
The FBI's Charlotte field office announced at approximately 2 p.m. Eastern that the incident had been resolved.
Specialized tactical units, including FBI SWAT, the FBI Hostage Rescue Team, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, responded to assist with ending the hostage situation.

Following the operation, video from the scene showed buses transporting inmates from the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail to other detention facilities.
Officials said no inmates remain housed at the jail following the incident.
During a news conference after the standoff ended, Bertie County Sheriff Tyrone Ruffin confirmed that authorities had successfully resolved the situation.
“I am relieved to report that the situation concluded safely around 2:00 pm today with minimum injuries,” Ruffin said.
While officials indicated that the incident ended without widespread injuries, authorities have not released additional information regarding those who were injured or the extent of their injuries.
Ruffin said investigators are now focused on determining exactly how inmates were able to gain control of the facility.
“Now that the incident has concluded, the investigation into what occurred and how it happened is just beginning. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations and the Federal Bureau of Investigations will be conducting interviews and investigations with all parties that are involved in the coming days,” he said.
The sheriff added that investigators expect the inquiry to continue for "several days."
Authorities have not released details regarding what triggered the disturbance or identified the inmates believed to have participated.
Officials also have not announced whether criminal charges will be filed in connection with the takeover.
During the news conference, Ruffin said the jail sustained damage during the tactical response.

He explained that deputies responded shortly after the incident began early Monday morning, but were unable to immediately enter the facility because inmates had already taken control.
Law enforcement agencies remained on scene for several hours while specialized teams worked to safely resolve the hostage situation.
Officials have not released information regarding the identities of the hostages or how many correctional officers or staff members were held during the incident.
The Bertie-Martin Regional Jail serves Bertie and Martin counties in northeastern North Carolina.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI are expected to continue processing evidence, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing the events that led to the takeover.
