In a move sparking controversy and accusations of partisanship, conservative nonprofit organization America First Legal (AFL) has filed a lawsuit against the Department of Justice (DOJ) for failing to release records requested under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) related to Matthew Colangelo's involvement in the New York criminal trial of former President Trump.

According to the lawsuit filed on Monday, AFL alleges that New York County District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who is leading the prosecution of Trump, brought Colangelo on board in December 2022 to accelerate the investigation into Trump. The decision to hire Colangelo reportedly stemmed from his track record of confronting Donald J. Trump and his family business.

Colangelo, a former high-ranking official at the DOJ and the New York Attorney General's Office, left his position to join Bragg's team, raising concerns about potential conflicts of interest due to the ongoing investigations involving Trump. AFL expressed disbelief at Colangelo's abrupt transition from the DOJ to a district attorney's office, characterizing it as a move driven by partisanship.

AFL's Executive Director, Gene Hamilton, emphasized the importance of obtaining Colangelo's calendars and communication records to shed light on the alleged coordinated effort against Trump. Hamilton underscored the significance of these records, given Colangelo's central role in the political targeting of the former president.

Despite AFL's initial FOIA request and subsequent follow-up communications with the DOJ, no documents have been released to the organization. The lawsuit details that the Justice Department requested additional time to process the request, citing "unusual circumstances," but ultimately failed to provide any requested materials.

Moreover, AFL is not the sole entity seeking access to Colangelo's records. Republican House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan recently urged New York Attorney General Letitia James to share Colangelo's documents, expressing concerns about Colangelo's apparent focus on investigating individuals rather than prosecuting crimes.

Colangelo's extensive history in government service dates back to the Obama administration, with notable roles in the Biden Justice Department overseeing various divisions.
