Bill Maher devoted a segment to discussing Graham Platner’s background, focusing on a series of controversies that Maher argued raise questions about whether Platner is suited for public office.

Maher began by acknowledging Platner’s military service, saying it remains an important part of his record regardless of later controversies.

“What I do know is he served his country in the Marines in war, and you can never discount how big that is,” Maher said.

At the same time, Maher said Platner’s military service exists alongside a number of personal and political controversies that have drawn scrutiny.

“But then there's the sexting while married scary behavior, so say some of his exes, old posts about how he's a communist, and all cops are bastards, and black people don't tip,” Maher said.

Maher also referenced comments he attributed to Platner regarding the Iraq War.

“Here's a typical Platner quote he said about the Iraq war. You can think it's dumb and also kind of not want to miss it,” Maher said.

The comedian then turned to another issue that has generated attention.

“And then, of course, there's the Nazi tattoo on his chest,” Maher said.

Maher argued that the collection of incidents and controversies paints a picture of someone whose life has been marked by instability and questionable decisions.

“I mean, seriously, this guy's whole life is the movie The Hangover,” Maher said.

Rather than pursuing a political career, Maher suggested Platner would be better served by taking time away from public life.

“He doesn't need a term in the Senate, he needs a gap year in Costa Rica,” Maher said.

Maher went on to argue that the tattoo controversy was not the most troubling issue associated with Platner. Instead, he pointed to comments that he said involved a hypothetical response to a home invasion.

“I wish the tattoo was the scariest thing about Plattner. It's not,” Maher said.

Maher then described what he characterized as Platner’s stated fantasy involving a home intruder.

“That would be his solution to a home invasion, which is to rape the home invader, and no, of course, that's not policy he's proposing, it's a fantasy,” Maher said.

Maher added that the allegations stemmed from claims made by one of Platner’s former partners.

“His ex says he talked about next week. It'll be policy,” Maher said.

Maher also referenced a clarification he said Platner had offered regarding those remarks.

“And to be fair, he said the raping wasn't something he'd do in a gay way, because that would be weird,” Maher said.
