President Donald Trump informed Attorney General Pam Bondi that her tenure in his administration was coming to an end during a private conversation on Wednesday, according to a report.
The exchange reportedly took place as the two traveled together from the White House to the Supreme Court, where they were set to attend oral arguments in a closely watched birthright citizenship case.
During the ride, Trump told Bondi, “I think it’s time,” the Wall Street Journal reported.
Bondi, who had been sworn in as Attorney General in February of last year, allegedly asked the president if she could remain in the role through the summer. Trump declined that request, according to the report.

Discussions about Bondi’s future had been ongoing since the beginning of the year.
The report indicated that Trump had grown increasingly dissatisfied with the pace at which key elements of his agenda were being carried out within the Department of Justice.
Sources cited in the report said the decision to remove Bondi was not tied to a single issue but rather stemmed from what was described as “a steady drip of frustrations.”

Among the concerns referenced were the handling of the Epstein files and a perceived lack of positive media coverage surrounding the Justice Department’s work.
Despite learning of her removal earlier in the day, Bondi remained at the White House through Wednesday evening. She attended Trump’s primetime national address regarding the Iran war later that night.
Bondi’s departure marks the second major personnel change within Trump’s administration in recent weeks. Previously, Trump removed Kristi Noem from her role as Secretary of Homeland Security.
In a statement posted to Truth Social on Thursday, Trump addressed Bondi’s exit and outlined the next steps for leadership at the Department of Justice.
“We love Pam, and she will be transitioning to a much-needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future, and our Deputy Attorney General, and a very talented and respected Legal Mind, Todd Blanche, will step in to serve as Acting Attorney General,” Trump wrote.

Todd Blanche is expected to take over in an acting capacity, and he is also considered a potential permanent replacement.
Additional names under consideration for the role include Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin.
Zeldin, a former congressman from Long Island, has emerged as a reported favorite among a group of Trump-aligned figures being discussed for the position. Others mentioned include Jeanine Pirro, Ken Paxton, and Ron DeSantis.
Bondi publicly addressed her removal Thursday night, expressing gratitude for her time in the role and signaling continued support for the president.
“Leading President Trump’s historic and highly successful efforts to make America safer and more secure has been the honor of a lifetime, and easily the most consequential first year of the Department of Justice in American history,” she wrote on X.
“I remain eternally grateful for the trust that President Trump placed in me to Make America Safe Again.”
