A 14-year-old girl from Mexico died after undergoing a secret breast augmentation allegedly performed by her mother’s boyfriend, leaving her father to uncover the truth only after her funeral, as reported by The New York Post.

The victim, identified as Paloma Nicole Arellano, reportedly underwent the surgery at a private clinic in Durango, Mexico, according to El Siglo de Durango. She died Saturday after suffering complications linked to the procedure.

Initially, Paloma Nicole’s father, Carlos Arellano, was informed by his ex-wife that their daughter had been hospitalized in Durango and later died of complications from COVID-19.

However, during the funeral, Carlos became suspicious after relatives remarked that his daughter’s chest appeared noticeably larger.

According to reports from The Arizona Republic, Carlos confronted Paloma Nicole’s mother, also named Paloma, who had traveled with their daughter to Durango.

She initially denied any knowledge of surgery. Later, when Carlos insisted on privately saying goodbye to his daughter, he discovered scars and breast implants that revealed the teen had undergone an augmentation procedure.

Investigators believe the surgery was performed by Víctor Manuel, a doctor who is in a relationship with Paloma Nicole’s mother. The Durango Prosecutor’s Office has launched a criminal investigation into the circumstances of the operation.

Manuel has been provisionally suspended by the Mexican Association of Plastic, Aesthetic, and Reconstructive Surgeons pending the outcome of the inquiry.

Reports indicate the procedure caused Paloma Nicole to go into cardiorespiratory arrest and suffer severe brain swelling. A hospital death certificate listed her cause of death as cerebral edema associated with a respiratory illness, though officials are awaiting the final autopsy results.

Authorities are continuing to examine the case to determine accountability and whether additional charges will be filed.

The case has drawn widespread attention in Mexico as questions mount over how the surgery was authorized, why her father was not informed, and how the clinic was able to perform the procedure on a minor. The investigation remains ongoing.
