A group of migrants believed to be from North Africa sparked chaos on a packed Spanish beach Sunday afternoon after leaping off a boat just feet from the shore and attempting to flee, as reported by The New York Post.

Video footage captured beachgoers in swimwear tackling the migrants and assisting law enforcement in detaining them.

The incident occurred at Sotillo Beach, located in the town of Castell de Ferro, Granada.

According to Spanish outlet El Mundo, a black motorboat carrying approximately a dozen migrants pulled up to the shallows before the individuals dove into the water fully clothed and began swimming toward the shore.

Multiple video clips of the scene circulated widely online, including footage from local Granada outlet Ideal.

In one clip, a sunbather wearing only a swimsuit is seen tackling one of the migrants to the ground and holding him there with a knee in his back until Spain’s Civil Guard arrives to take over. Local police officers also responded and helped secure the scene.

Witnesses described the moment as unexpected and confusing.

“We all stood there staring, not quite knowing what was happening. We thought it was a recreational boat, but when we saw people starting to throw objects into the water and getting out, we realized it wasn’t normal,” said Alberto Garcia, a beachfront restaurant owner, in an interview with Ideal.

Garcia noted that the boat's slow, deliberate approach was particularly unusual.

“What surprised us most was that the boat was moving very slowly, as if they weren’t in a hurry or afraid. They went in where there were more people, as if nothing had happened, and stopped five meters from the shore,” he added.

Video shows that after dropping off the migrants, the vessel—carrying four individuals—turned around and calmly departed from the area.

Authorities have not yet released the identities or nationalities of those detained. It is also unclear whether the boat crew was intercepted after fleeing the scene.

Spain continues to see a rise in migrant arrivals by sea, particularly along the southern coast, with organized smuggling operations frequently bringing individuals across the Mediterranean.

Local law enforcement is continuing to investigate the incident and search for any involved parties who may still be at large.
