The House of Representatives passed President Donald Trump’s sweeping reconciliation package, known as the “Big Beautiful Bill,” in a narrow 218-214 vote on Thursday, as reported by the Gateway Pundit.
The legislation includes tax cuts, significant immigration enforcement funding, and rollbacks to federal assistance programs, including food stamps and Medicaid.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., reacted emotionally after the vote, describing the legislation as devastating. Speaking to reporters, she said, “I think this is one of the saddest days in modern American history.”

Ocasio-Cortez added, “17 million Americans in our country are going to lose their Medicaid. They’re gonna lose their ACA insurance. Small business owners are going to have their health care costs skyrocket. And people are gonna have their SNAP cut back.”
She concluded, “People are gonna go hungry. People are gonna get sick.”

The final vote came after hours of negotiations and internal Republican discussions. Reps. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania were the only GOP members to oppose the legislation.
Key provisions in the legislation include:

- Tax relief for service workers, including the elimination of taxes on tips.
- Increased work requirements for food stamp recipients and cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
- A $45 billion allocation toward completing the southern border wall.
- Massive funding increases for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
- Cuts to Medicaid expansion and changes to Affordable Care Act subsidies.
The bill is part of President Trump’s broader policy agenda to prioritize immigration enforcement, reduce federal spending on entitlement programs, and provide tax relief.

House Democrats were vocally opposed to the legislation throughout the process. Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks followed hours of debate on the House floor. While speaking to press outside the Capitol, she appeared visibly shaken, saying, “People are gonna go hungry.”
Republicans defended the bill as a necessary shift toward fiscal discipline and border security. GOP leaders praised the inclusion of border enforcement funding and applauded the tax relief measures aimed at working-class Americans.
The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
