Officers from the Elkhart Police Department responded to reports of an active shooter inside the store.
Upon arrival, officers and emergency medical service crews found two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds inside the supermarket.
Tragically, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, police confirmed.
During their response, officers encountered a third individual believed to be the shooter.
A gunfire exchange ensued between law enforcement and the suspect, ultimately resulting in the suspect being fatally shot, authorities stated.
Two officers sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation and were transported to a nearby hospital.

According to police, both officers are in stable condition.
“It’s a sad day in Elkhart,” said Jessica McBrier, public information officer for the Elkhart Police Department.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people affected.”
