A high school basketball game in Georgia turned violent earlier this month when a Rockmart High School player attacked two opponents with punches during a game against Sonoraville High School.
The incident, which was captured on video and has since gone viral, occurred on January 3 in the Sonoraville High School gymnasium.
The video shows the Rockmart player shoving a Sonoraville player to the ground after a play. As the Sonoraville player stands up, the Rockmart player responds by delivering a punch to his face, knocking him back to the floor.
Moments later, another Sonoraville player rushes toward the Rockmart player, only to be met with another punch, sending him to the ground as well.

The Rockmart player was quickly escorted off the court by an adult.
According to TMZ, a police report filed after the incident states that the Rockmart player, whose name has not been disclosed, claimed he “lost his temper” after being called a racial slur during the game.
The player alleged that he was called the "N-word," though the police report does not provide any evidence supporting this claim.
Authorities have not confirmed whether an investigation into the allegation is ongoing.

The Rockmart player has been charged with two counts of simple battery in connection with the incident.
Neither Rockmart High School nor Sonoraville High School has issued a public statement regarding the altercation.

As a teacher of two decades, if a POC starts a fight, they always say the other person called them the N word. Every time. It has become a get out of jail free card for them. The opposite doesn’t work. If a POC calls a white student a “”cracker” or other vile term, they are expected to shrug it off. The only way to deal with this is not allow violence based on reprisal for calling someone a name. Report it. If you can’t compete and follow those rules, don’t compete. If there is no balance, people will start to find the balance for themselves. If a player is accused of using inappropriate language, mike him. It is really pretty easy. Mike the person who does the accusing as well. Balance.
I have taught for two decades. The “he called me the N word” has become the get out of jail free card. It no longer means it happened, it means I don’t want to pay for sucker punching another player. If a player calls you a name, tell the ref. If this works, next time a white kid sucker punches a black kid, all he has to say is “he called me a cracker”. That of course will not work. It shouldn’t work in this case either. Outplay the other player. Let your coach know. Deal with it like a young man, not a five year old. If he walks for this, watch him be targeted and then have people say “he called me a cracker’. People are getting tired of two tiered justice even at this level. People have reached a point of tit for tat. If you have to, mike the players. Trash talk by players is no longer permissible. Put a stop to it. Mike the players, and if someone does call someone a racist name, suspend for the next two games. That goes for any player, regardless of race.
