The House Judiciary Committee is digging into bombshell whistleblower claims suggesting that former FBI Director James Comey secretly ordered an off-the-books investigation targeting Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
As reported by the Washington Times, a whistleblower, reportedly an FBI agent involved in the investigation, disclosed to the committee that this probe, allegedly kept off the books, began soon after Trump announced his presidential bid in June 2015.
This revelation, if accurate, could shed light on deep-seated biases within federal agencies aimed at derailing Trump’s initial White House run.

According to the whistleblower’s disclosure, two female FBI agents infiltrated Trump’s campaign at high levels, posing as “honeypots” to embed themselves in campaign activities and keep tabs on Trump and his inner circle.
These agents, directed to act as undercover operatives, engaged closely with the campaign on the trail. The whistleblower stressed that this investigation was not the same as the infamous Crossfire Hurricane probe that later pursued alleged Russian interference in Trump’s 2016 campaign.

Instead, it was a separate, off-the-books criminal investigation with Trump himself as the prime target, though it appeared to lack a specific basis beyond a broad attempt to uncover something incriminating.

The disclosure indicates that Comey “personally directed” this secret investigation, operating without a legitimate case file or official records in the FBI’s Sentinel system, usually reserved for documenting active cases.
According to the whistleblower, this operation went beyond regular protocol, keeping information from Justice Department Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz, who later reviewed FBI misconduct in its Russia probe involving Trump.
The report implies an underlying institutional bias against Trump and his campaign, a sentiment that many conservatives have argued existed within the FBI and other agencies.

Former FBI Assistant Director Chris Swecker weighed in, remarking that, if true, this secretive effort to infiltrate a presidential campaign without clear authorization or justification is a “booming, egregious violation” of rules governing the bureau.
Swecker highlighted that any sensitive investigation targeting a presidential candidate must be cleared by the attorney general and thoroughly justified, none of which seems to be present in this scenario.
The House Judiciary Committee has confirmed it received the whistleblower allegations and plans to investigate further. Despite repeated attempts to gather comments from the FBI and Comey, no responses were reported.

As the committee continues its probe, these allegations raise critical questions about the FBI’s conduct under Comey’s leadership.
Trump, who announced his campaign in June 2015 at Trump Tower in New York, faced unprecedented scrutiny that eventually led to Crossfire Hurricane.
However, this whistleblower report suggests that the FBI’s targeting of Trump began earlier, and with even less basis than Crossfire Hurricane.
