In Hillsborough County, a notable crackdown on human trafficking led by the local sheriff's office has culminated in the arrest of 148 individuals and the rescue of seven human trafficking victims over the last three months.

The operation, labeled Operation Summer Shield, was spearheaded by the county's dedicated Human Trafficking Squad, which also pressed charges against 11 people found directly participating in these crimes.

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Sheriff Chad Chronister highlighted the significant outcomes of this sweeping initiative.

Among those recovered were five adult women and two juvenile girls, victims of the clandestine trafficking network that the operation aimed to dismantle.

Sheriff Chronister detailed several alarming instances uncovered during the operation.

One notable case involved 33-year-old John Randall Craddock, who found himself ensnared by undercover detectives after he mistakenly believed he was communicating with a 15-year-old girl online. "Craddock sent numerous explicit and perverse messages and even audio messages detailing the sexual acts he wanted to perform on this 15-year-old," explained Chronister.

Craddock now faces multiple charges, including traveling to meet a minor and attempted lewd or lascivious battery.

Another disturbing case was that of 28-year-old Devante Kershaw, who Sheriff Chronister said was devising a "business plan" to exploit women for financial gain. Believing he was dealing with a 30-year-old woman, Kershaw outlined to an undercover detective his strategy to manage and profit from her exploitation, promising her only 40% of the earnings.

His detailed plans included organizing dates and arranging travel across states. Kershaw has been charged under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act for conspiracy, along with unlawful use of a two-way communication device.

Sheriff Chronister noted that the Human Trafficking Squad employs various strategies to track down traffickers, from online investigations—including monitoring the dark web—to physical surveillance in high-risk areas such as hotels, motels, and other entertainment venues.

Addressing the challenges in prosecuting such crimes, State Attorney Suzy Lopez emphasized the fears that many victims bear, often terrified to testify against their abusers.

She explained that traffickers frequently use threats against victims or their families to maintain control. "We stand with you," Lopez reassured victims, detailing the support mechanisms in place, including dedicated victim advocates who assist survivors through the legal processes and help them access community resources.

Signifying the gravity of these offenses, Lopez reminded the public that the mandatory minimum sentence for human trafficking in Florida is life imprisonment.

The successful results of Operation Summer Shield contribute to a growing track record for the Human Trafficking Squad, established by Sheriff Chronister in June 2021.

Since its inception, the squad has executed 793 arrests and facilitated the recovery of 42 victims, affirming the dedication of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office to eradicating human trafficking and safeguarding the community.

The resolve of Sheriff Chronister remains clear: "Our mission is clear: to protect our community and hold traffickers accountable," he stated. "We will not rest until every victim is safe and every trafficker is behind bars. Traffickers, your days of exploiting innocent people are over in Hillsborough County."
