Italian boxer Angela Carini made the decision to abandon her bout against Algerian fighter Imane Khelif during the Paris Olympics.
The match, scheduled in the 66-kilogram weight division, lasted a mere 46 seconds before Carini went to her corner to call off the fight, leaving Khelif to celebrate and Carini in tears.

Carini provided her reasons for walking away, stating, "I went into the ring to fight. I didn't give up, but a punch hurt too much, and so I said enough. … I'm leaving with my head held high" (as reported by Italy's ASNA).
Despite Carini's departure from the match, Khelif will progress to the next round of the women's 66-kilogram division. However, this victory comes amid a week filled with controversy.

Khelif was disqualified from the 2023 World Boxing Championships after failing gender tests. The International Boxing Association concluded that Khelif had elevated levels of testosterone, as reported by Reuters.

Umar Kremlev, president of the International Boxing Association, explained the decision, stating, "Based on DNA tests, we identified a number of athletes who tried to trick their colleagues into posing as women. According to the results of the tests, it was proved that they have XY chromosomes. Such athletes were excluded from competition" (as reported by Russia's Tass News Agency).
Despite the disqualification from the World Championships, the International Olympic Committee cleared Khelif to compete in the Paris Olympics. The Algerian Olympic Committee (COA) strongly defended Khelif against criticism ahead of her match.
"COA strongly condemns the unethical targeting and maligning of our esteemed athlete, Imane Khelif, with baseless propaganda from certain foreign media outlets," expressed the Algerian Olympic Committee, as reported by Reuters. "Such attacks on her personality and dignity are deeply unfair, especially as she prepares for the pinnacle of her career at the Olympics. The COA has taken all necessary measures to protect our champion."

Italian officials, however, voiced concerns regarding Khelif's eligibility and the lack of clear, uniform criteria at the international level. Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi stated, "It is surprising that there are no certain, strict, uniform criteria at the international level. That there can be a suspicion, and far more than a suspicion, of an unfair and potentially dangerous contest for one of the contenders at the Olympics, an event that symbolizes sporting fairness" (as reported by Reuters).
