Former President Donald Trump recently proposed that seniors should be exempted from paying taxes on their Social Security income.

This announcement was made recently on his Truth Social platform.

This move marks a major departure from the decades-long policy of taxing Social Security benefits.

Social Security is a retirement support program that can be claimed starting at the age of 62, with benefits increasing the longer one waits to claim them, up to retirement age of 70.

However, the taxation of Social Security income began in 1984 when President Ronald Reagan signed the legislation.

At present, seniors receiving income from Social Security are required to pay taxes on 50% of the income from the program, with some cases as high as 85% based on certain thresholds.

Seniors are an important demographic group required for Trump to win the upcoming elections.
