Melvindale police officer Mohamed Said, 23, was killed in the line of duty while responding to a call of suspicious activity near a carwash at Oakwood and Dix.

The shooting took place in the 17000 block of Clarann Street in Melvindale just after 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. Michael Lopez, 44, was taken into custody on Monday in Southwest Detroit in connection with Said's death.

Said approached Lopez, who subsequently fled when the officer attempted to make contact with him, according to authorities. A pursuit ensued, during which Said tased Lopez. Lopez then produced a firearm and shot the officer.

A manhunt involving the ATF, Michigan State Police, Melvindale police, the National Police Defense Foundation, and U.S. Marshals began soon after the shooting. The agencies offered a $37,500 reward in exchange for information that led to Lopez's arrest.

Lopez has a criminal record that includes carjacking and resisting arrest, according to officials.

Officer Said was a member of the Melvindale Police Department for one year. His friend, Mohamed Alomari, expressed his heartbreak and that "It's tough on us, especially for a young man that didn't get to see the things he wanted to do in his life, get married and have kids."
