In a recent appearance on "Pod Save America," former White House press secretary and current MSNBC host Jen Psaki ignited speculation within the Democratic party by pointing to Vice President Kamala Harris as the potential "alternative" in the 2024 election should Joe Biden step aside. The discussion unfolded as the fallout from Biden's lackluster debate performance continues to reverberate, with growing calls for him to consider withdrawing from the race.

During the podcast, Psaki emphasized, "The alternative is very clearly in my view—there’s a lot of really amazing Democrats on the bench, but because of the timeline and everything, I think it is clearly Kamala Harris," as captured in a clip highlighted by Mediaite. However, when pressed by host Jon Lovett about the lack of overwhelming support for Harris within the party, Psaki noted that some Democrats are not "comfortable" with her ascendancy.

Reflecting on the party's response towards consolidating around Harris, Psaki remarked, "I’m observing what people are saying. It’s typically 'don’t take it away from Kamala Harris if it’s open, that would be unfair.'"

While Psaki highlighted Harris as a "fierce communicator" and a potential asset in addressing issues such as abortion, she suggested that Harris may encounter difficulties securing certain votes due to lingering biases in the nation. Psaki noted, "It’s almost like public opinion hasn’t caught up with what she is doing out there, and also, we live in a country that is sexist and racist, so there is that. Not everybody at all, but there is a level of it that does impact elections."
