Residents in Ruidoso, New Mexico faced a new threat on Tuesday as the aftermath of recent wildfires turned into a flash flood emergency, prompting road closures and evacuations in the mountain village.

Authorities scrambled to keep vehicles away from the path of rapidly flowing water that carried mud and debris down creeks and across streets, leading to the closure of multiple bridge crossings. Urgent warnings were issued by the village on social media, urging residents to seek higher ground immediately as the National Weather Service raised the alarm on the flash flood emergency.

During the chaos, a mobile home park was evacuated, and reports of multiple natural gas leaks caused by the floodwaters surfaced. Videos posted by residents captured the turbulent waters blocking their access home, with police cars diverting traffic and concrete barriers erected to contain the debris.

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque shared that the storms had already led to numerous water rescues and dumped up to 1.5 inches of rain, with more precipitation anticipated for the following day. Flood watches and warnings were also issued for various regions, including northern New Mexico, where recovery efforts from a 2022 wildfire still linger—an incident triggered by government-conducted fires gone wrong.

 

With forecasts predicting rainfall of up to 2 inches, accompanied by hail and powerful wind gusts reaching 60 mph, the threat of further damage looms large over the already embattled community. Residents remain on high alert as Ruidoso and its surrounding areas grapple with the dual impact of wildfire aftermath and flash flooding.
