Video footage has emerged of an incident in Northampton, where a man assaulted a police officer with a knife.

The incident occurred on March 8 when police officers responded to reports of an assault at a residential property. Upon their arrival, Gordon Finnlayson, 39, greeted them with a snide remark, confidently declaring, "You are too late." Without warning, he brandished a knife and proceeded to slash at one of the officers, who was forced to the floor, her screams drowning in his laughter.

Undeterred by the attempts of the officers to disarm him, Finnlayson continued to shove and push them to the ground. Despite their pleas, he  berated them with derogatory language before making an escape.

Outside the premises, the injured officer asked her colleague to check if she had been stabbed, immediately apologizing for instinctively stepping back, unsure of her own condition.

Even during his arrest, Finnlayson displayed a lack of remorse, laughing in the street. It took three deployments of a taser for authorities to finally subdue him and transport him into custody.

Thankfully, the injured officers did not suffer major physical harm, although they were rushed to the hospital for evaluation.

Finnlayson was recently sentenced to a six-year jail term at Northampton Crown Court after admitting to two counts of Section 18 attempted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The court heard that Finnlayson had a record of 35 previous convictions, including seven assaults on police officers.

Detective Inspector Nick Peters emphasized the exceptional courage shown by the officers during this violent and sustained assault. Despite the assailant being armed and larger in size, the officers united together, protecting one another from potentially fatal injuries. Peters expressed gratitude for their determination and bravery.
