The Biden administration appears to have had a sudden change of heart when it comes to surgical sex-change procedures for minors. Previously, they seemed to endorse the practice, but now they have taken a different stance, stating that these surgeries should be limited to adults.

A White House spokesperson made it clear that they view these as deeply personal decisions that should be reserved for adults. However, they still support gender-affirming care for minors, which includes other forms of treatment such as hormone therapy and puberty blockers. They also emphasized the role of parents, families, and doctors in making these decisions.

This shift in position comes as the Supreme Court has agreed to hear a challenge to a Tennessee law that bans these types of treatments for transgender-identifying minors. The Biden administration has played a part in this challenge, but the constitutionality of such bans has yet to be determined.

Interestingly, this change in stance from the Biden administration comes on the heels of a report that staff in the office of Assistant Secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services, Rachel Levine, urged a professional association to remove age minimums for surgeries.

The proposed guidelines had recommended specific ages for different types of surgeries, but those recommendations were ultimately removed from the final guidelines released in 2022. An HHS spokesman stated that this decision was based on the belief that the proposed lower ages were not supported by science or research and could potentially lead to attacks on the transgender community.

It is worth noting that the Biden administration has previously expressed support for sex-change operations for individuals who identify as transgender, including children. However, this latest development makes it clear that they now oppose surgical procedures for minors, though they still support other forms of treatment.

As the Supreme Court prepares to hear the challenge to the Tennessee law, more Republican-led states have taken action to implement similar bans. These states argue that they are trying to protect children from irreversible procedures that they may later regret.
