The victim, Adam Mercado, said he initially noticed the assailant holding the branch earlier in the evening. But despite being apprehensive, he decided to stay on the bar's front patio. Later that night, as he and his girlfriend were saying goodbye to friends outside the bar, the attacker struck Mercado on the head with the branch, causing him to fall to the ground.

After that, the attacker turned his attention to a bar employee whom he punched before walking away in downtown Dallas. Mercado was able to make his way to a hospital after initially declining medical assistance due to financial concerns.

The incident is part of an alarming trend of rising violent crime in Dallas. According to the Dallas Police Department's records, over 2,000 aggravated assaults were reported since the start of the year, while the total number of violent crimes reported in May alone was over 500.
