An Ecuadorian migrant was apprehended on Tuesday for allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl in a secluded area of Kissena Park in Queens, according to sources involved in the investigation.

Believed to have entered the country in 2021, the suspect was taken into custody after reportedly wielding a “machete-style” blade and holding both the young girl and a 13-year-old boy at knifepoint. This brazen, broad-daylight assault unfolded on Thursday afternoon, sending shockwaves through the local neighborhood.

The predator targeted the victims in the park and forcibly led them to a secluded location within Flushing Meadows. After restraining them by tying their wrists with shoelaces, he proceeded to commit the heinous act against the girl, as recounted by NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny in previous statements.

Following the assault, the assailant confiscated the teens’ phones and instructed them to remain in place for 20 minutes before fleeing. Traumatized by the encounter, the young victims sought help at a nearby school, where staff promptly called 911.

The incident set off an intense manhunt for the perpetrator, instilling fear in the community and prompting heightened police presence in the park throughout subsequent days. Local residents, concerned for the safety of their children who frequently visit the park, expressed their unease in the wake of the attack.

“Everybody is tense since the news because we all have small children that are playing here, and it happened in the day,” shared worried father Alankar Ngar.

Kissena Park is a popular location for children and students from nearby schools, making the incident all the more distressing for the local community.

Recognizing the severity of the crime, the NYPD dedicated over 60 investigators to the manhunt, prioritizing a comprehensive effort to bring the perpetrator to justice.

“I want (the community) to rest assured that we will spare no expense. We will use every investigative resource and, again, implore the help of the community to help us bring closure for these young children and for this family,” assured NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey during a briefing on the incident.

The arrest followed the dissemination of images and footage of the suspect by the NYPD on Monday evening. To incentivize public assistance, the department offered a $10,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the responsible individual.

Pending charges against the suspect will be determined as the legal process unfolds.
