Tragedy struck the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills when a shooting incident left nine people injured, including an 8-year-old boy critically wounded in the head and a 4-year-old boy with a thigh injury. A 39-year-old woman, also critically injured, was among the victims, all from the same family.
According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the attacker opened fire in a spontaneous and indiscriminate manner, unleashing a flurry of shots before fleeing. Unfathomably, the shooter was a mere 20 feet away from the victims, brandishing a 9mm Glock and expending a terrifying 28 rounds in the assault.

We had an active shooter at the splash pad on Auburn in Rochester Hills. That is still an active crime scene and we potentially have the suspect contained nearby, but we asked for the moment people stay away from the area. We have numerous wounded victims. More to follow.

Following the attack, the suspect evaded authorities, only to be later discovered deceased by suicide in a Shelby Township residence. Additional investigation uncovered a second weapon in the home, described by Bouchard as a potential semi-automatic 223, raising concerns about further planned malfeasance.

The assailant, a 42-year-old white male with no criminal history but reportedly struggling with mental health issues, was found to have been living with his mother. The heartbreak and chaos left the community reeling, as Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett lamented the perversion of a place meant for innocent gatherings and joyful moments.
Adding to the somber sentiments, U.S. Rep. John James, R-Farmington Hills, decried the tragedy, affirming that fathers should not be confined to hospitals on Father’s Day. Governor Gretchen Whitmer also commented on the incident, expressing a desolate sentiment as authorities continued to address the situation.

In response, the Oakland Community Health Network pledged mental health support for the victims and anyone present during the attack, a small respite in the face of unfathomable horror.
