San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano is under the microscope of Major League Baseball (MLB) for alleged betting activities, raising the possibility of a lifetime ban. An anonymous source revealed that Marcano is suspected of wagering on Pittsburgh Pirates games while he was on the injured list last season.

Marcano, 24, has been sidelined since tearing his right ACL on July 24. The Padres picked him up off waivers on November 2, and he was subsequently placed on the 10-day injured list on March 19. The Wall Street Journal first broke the news of the investigation on Monday.

In a statement, the Padres acknowledged the investigation: "We are aware of an active investigation by Major League Baseball regarding a matter that occurred when the player in question was a member of another organization and not affiliated with the San Diego Padres. We will not have any further comment until the investigative process has been completed."

Marcano’s agent, Michel Velasquez of Rimas Sports, and the Major League Baseball Players Association both declined to comment.

MLB’s Rule 21, posted in every clubhouse, states that betting on any baseball game in which a player has no duty to perform results in a one-year suspension. Betting on a game in which the person has a duty to perform leads to a lifetime ban. Additionally, betting on other sports through illegal bookmakers can result in discipline as deemed appropriate by the baseball commissioner.

Historically, Pete Rose, the career hits leader, agreed to a lifetime ban in 1989 after an investigation found he bet on Cincinnati Reds games while managing the team. The last active player suspended under this provision was New York Giants outfielder Jimmy O’Connell, banned for life in 1924 for attempting to bribe a Philadelphia Phillies player to throw a game.

Marcano made his major league debut on April 1, 2021, and has a career batting average of .217, with five home runs, 34 RBIs, and seven stolen bases in 149 games. He has played both infield and outfield positions.
