Former Minnesota Vikings defensive lineman Everson Griffen was arrested on Tuesday night in Minneapolis on charges of driving under the influence and possession of cocaine. According to Hennepin County Jail records, Griffen, 36, was booked at 12:59 a.m. on May 29 after being apprehended by Minnesota State Police approximately an hour earlier.

State Patrol informed TMZ that Griffen was initially pulled over for driving his Bentley Bentayga at a high rate of speed. He later registered a 0.10 blood alcohol concentration on a breathalyzer test, surpassing the legal limit of 0.08. Consequently, Griffen faces five charges, including DWI and operating a motor vehicle with an alcohol concentration above the legal limit.

In addition to the DUI charges, Griffen is also facing a fifth-degree drug possession charge. KARE11 reports that a state trooper found a small plastic vial containing a white powder in Griffen’s back right pants pocket, which tested positive for cocaine.

Griffen was released from custody at 3:13 p.m. on May 30. His court date is set for June 13 at 1:15 p.m. A Twitter post by TMZ appears to show Griffin's mugshot:

This arrest is not Griffen’s first encounter with the law. Less than a year ago, he was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Following a July 2023 incident, he pleaded guilty to a careless driving charge, resulting in a one-year probation. Three months later, Griffen crashed his vehicle into a fence and gazebo, leading to a petty misdemeanor for failure to drive with due care. Additionally, he was convicted of another petty misdemeanor for speeding two months after the crash.

Griffen, who played 11 seasons with the Vikings and earned four Pro Bowls, has also faced significant mental health challenges throughout his career. In 2021, he called 911, claiming intruders were trying to enter his home. He posted videos on Instagram, showing a gun he said was purchased with the help of then-teammate Dalvin Cook. Griffen eventually left his home after hours of negotiations with police and team psychologists and entered a healthcare facility.

In 2018, Griffen underwent a mental health evaluation following an incident at Hotel Ivy in Minneapolis, where he was accused of threatening to shoot someone. Two days earlier, he had received a letter from the Vikings stating he would not be allowed back on the team without undergoing a mental health evaluation. Griffen later revealed in December 2021 that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
