Denny Hamlin achieved a personal milestone on Sunday by winning three straight NASCAR Cup Series races for the first time in his career. His latest triumph came in the Great American Getaway 400 at Pocono Raceway, where he surged ahead of his competition during the closing laps.
Hamlin’s Joe Gibbs Racing team executed a green flag pit stop strategy that allowed him to emerge in front of William Byron. In the final moments, he overtook teammate Christopher Bell with four laps remaining, as Bell attempted to conserve fuel to reach the checkered flag.
This victory marked Hamlin’s eighth career win at Pocono, his fourth of 2026, and the 64th overall of his Cup Series tenure. The result broke a tie and placed him ninth alone on NASCAR’s all-time wins list.
Speaking after the race to Prime Video, Hamlin expressed his feelings on the accomplishment. “So special here,” Hamlin said. “This whole team has done an amazing job. So happy for this whole Joe Gibbs Racing team. The pit crew is flawless right now. We just have it all going. It’s certainly the best we’ve been. That’s why we’re winning.”
The win narrowed Hamlin’s gap in the Cup Series standings. After trailing by 129 points following the Watkins Glen event on May 10, he now sits only 19 points behind Reddick for the overall lead.
Reddick edged Byron on the last lap to secure third place, while John Hunter Nemechek and Kyle Larson rounded out the top five. Erik Jones, Chris Buescher, Ross Chastain, Ty Gibbs, and Ryan Blaney completed the top 10 finishers at Pocono.
Christopher Bell, who had been in position for a strong result before running out of fuel, finished 26th. His effort came just a week after suffering a broken wrist in a crash at Michigan, adding to a challenging stretch for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver.
Chase Elliott came home 11th, Daniel Suarez took 13th, Carson Hocevar placed 20th, Bubba Wallace was 21st, and Alex Bowman finished 27th. Each battled through the Pocono field in the 400-mile event.
Further back, Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski, both fighting near the Chase qualification line entering the weekend, were involved in a crash and finished 34th and 38th respectively.
With 10 races left in the Cup Series regular season, the chase for playoff berths remains tight. Austin Cindric currently owns the 16th and final qualifying spot, sitting only four points ahead of Keselowski.
The result at Pocono added another chapter to Hamlin’s strong form and reinforced the momentum of his Joe Gibbs Racing group in recent weeks. His comments underscored both confidence and satisfaction in his team’s current performance level.
At the same venue one day earlier, Justin Allgaier extended his own winning ways with a victory in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race. The veteran secured his fifth win of 2026 and clinched a spot in the series’ Chase standings, continuing his productive season at Pocono.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., whose JR Motorsports team fields Allgaier’s No. 7 Chevrolet, praised him as “dependable” and referred to the driver as the cornerstone of his race team. Earnhardt Jr. said, “He’s going to run good every week. Some days he’ll be our best car, but he’ll always be a solid race car. He’s been the cornerstone of the company, and his success and consistency has helped stabilize us throughout some tough times.”
Allgaier, 40, also revealed he is leaning toward returning for 2027 despite earlier talk of retirement. The race created one more memorable moment for Earnhardt Jr., who took his daughter Nicole on a celebratory ride to Victory Lane following Allgaier’s win.
Allgaier leads the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series standings by 250 points over second-place Jesse Love. His Pocono victory represented the 33rd of his career and the 30th under the JR Motorsports banner, reinforcing his strong hold atop the standings.
Meanwhile, NASCAR’s national scene continues to draw tight competition with just weeks remaining in the Cup Series regular season. Hamlin’s latest victory at Pocono further establishes his standing while tightening the playoff picture across the field.
The Great American Getaway 400 thus delivered memorable achievements for several drivers across multiple divisions at Pocono, showcasing key shifts in standings and career milestones for both Hamlin and Allgaier.
