Medal Bracket Sets Stage for Eight Teams Contending in Milano Cortina Hockey

The 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Games are down to the knockout stage for men’s hockey, and the medal bracket is taking shape as the final week arrives. Eight teams still have to win a qualification playoff to keep their dream alive, while four have already locked in their place.

Canada sits as an automatic qualifier in Group A, while Switzerland, Czechia and France move into the qualification playoff hunt. That quartet entered the playoff stage by virtue of the preliminary results, setting the tone for a tense sprint to the medals.

In Group B, Slovakia and Finland earned automatic berths, leaving Sweden and Italy to chase a spot in the bracket. The mix of power and under pressure headlines the moves toward the elimination rounds.

Group C sees the United States secure an automatic qualification, with Germany, Denmark and Latvia forced into the qualification playoff path. The balance of power is clear and the bracket will depend on the playoff outcomes.

After the round robin, rankings were calculated by group standings and goal differential, and the seeds were used to reseed the bracket. Canada leads the pack, followed by the United States and Slovakia, then Finland, Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, Czechia, Denmark, Latvia, France and Italy.

The first playoff games saw Germany 5, France 1. Switzerland 3, Italy 0. Czechia versus Denmark and Sweden versus Latvia were scheduled for February 17 at 10:40 a.m. Eastern and 3:10 p.m. Eastern, respectively.

The quarterfinals are set for February 18 with Slovakia facing Germany at 6:10 a.m. Eastern. Canada will meet the winner of the Czechia or Denmark pairing at 10:40 a.m., while Finland faces Switzerland at 12:10 p.m. and the United States plays the Sweden or Latvia winner at 3:10 p.m.

After the quarterfinals, teams will be reseeded based on the preliminary round rankings following the bracket results.

Semifinals will be played on February 20 with the matchups still to be determined. Bronze is scheduled for February 21 at 1:40 a.m. Eastern and Gold on February 22 at 7:10 a.m. Eastern.

This format punishes every misstep in a one game scenario, and the seeds reflect the balance of power as the field narrows toward the podium. The drama is not merely about who wins but about who survives the mental grind of a must win game.

Eight teams alive means depth and goaltending will be tested in ways that prize not just skill but the willingness to fight through fatigue. The playoff path is a relentless gauntlet that separates pretenders from contenders and that is exactly what makes Olympic hockey so compelling.

When the dust settles, fans will be treated to high level hockey with everything on the line, and the scoreboard will tell the true story of which nations still dream of gold. The knockout stage always delivers the unexpected and Milano Cortina is living proof.
