LUBBOCK, Texas — Arizona’s hopes in Tuesday night’s game at Texas Tech took a hit when forward Koa Peat left with an injury during the Wildcats’ 67-53 loss at United Supermarkets Arena.
Peat exited with 13:58 remaining in the first half and did not return, according to ESPN, leaving Arizona without one of its leading players for the rest of the contest. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 19-7 on the season, with multiple key games on the horizon in Pac-12 play. Arizona entered the game ranked 16th in the AP Top 25, while Texas Tech improved to 19-7 with the victory.
Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd said after the game that Peat’s status moving forward was unclear, listing the injury as lower-body related. “It’s tough losing a player like that in a game,” Lloyd said. “We’ll see where he’s at once we get some scans and see how it looks.”
Peat, a junior forward from Milwaukee, had been a central figure for Arizona this season, averaging double-figure scoring and contributing on both ends of the court. Prior to the injury against Texas Tech, he had been averaging 11.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, providing Arizona with reliable production in a season marked by ups and downs.
In the first half at Texas Tech, Peat logged eight points before the injury occurred. Arizona struggled to find offensive rhythm after his departure, managing only 23 points in the first half and trailing by double digits at intermission.
Arizona committed 14 turnovers in the game and shot 38.7% from the field, factors that compounded the absence of Peat and contributed to the Wildcats’ defeat. Texas Tech, meanwhile, used a balanced attack to build a lead and maintain it through the final minutes. The Red Raiders shot 45.9% overall and held a 39-23 rebounding edge.
Lloyd noted that Arizona would rely on its remaining rotation to cover the missing production if Peat’s availability is impacted in the near future. “We have to trust the next man up,” Lloyd said. “Everyone here understands their role, and guys have to be ready when their number gets called.”
Arizona’s next game is scheduled for Saturday at home against California, a matchup that will carry additional significance if Peat’s status remains uncertain. California entered Tuesday with a 10-16 record but has had competitive outings in recent weeks.
In the absence of Peat, guard Azuolas Tubelis led Arizona with 17 points, while Pelle Larsson chipped in nine. Texas Tech was paced by Jamal Shead, who scored 18 points, and Kevin McCullar Jr., who added 14.
The Wildcats now face a stretch of games that could define their NCAA Tournament seeding hopes. Arizona has upcoming matchups with Oregon State, UCLA and USC, all of which will test the team’s depth and resilience.
Texas Tech’s win snapped a two-game skid and provided momentum as the Red Raiders prepare for Big 12 play. After Tuesday’s victory, Texas Tech sits 8-4 in conference action, a position that keeps it in contention for the league’s upper tier.
Peat’s injury adds an element of uncertainty to Arizona’s season as the Wildcats navigate a crucial stretch. With postseason aspirations on the line, Arizona will monitor its forward closely and hope that the issue is not long-term.
