A body was discovered Tuesday during the search for missing Texas teenager Camila Mendoza Olmos, nearly a week after she disappeared from her home on Christmas Eve, according to local authorities, as reported by The New York Post.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar announced during a late Tuesday press conference that sheriff’s deputies and FBI agents located the body in a field close to Olmos’ home.

The medical examiner has not yet confirmed the identity of the remains.

Salazar said officials expect the medical examiner’s office to determine the identity “in the next day or two” and to confirm the cause and manner of death.

Camila Mendoza Olmos, 19, was reported missing after she vanished early Dec. 24. Her disappearance triggered an extensive search involving local, state, and federal authorities.

According to Salazar, a gun was also recovered near the body. Investigators had been searching for a missing firearm belonging to one of Olmos’ relatives, though authorities have not confirmed whether the weapon recovered at the scene is the same firearm.

Officials had previously searched the field where the body was found. Salazar said the area was searched again because of dense, high brush that may have limited visibility during earlier efforts.

During the press conference, Salazar shared information investigators uncovered during the search. He said authorities discovered information leading them to believe Olmos had been experiencing suicidal ideations and showed signs of depression.

He said it appeared Olmos “was a young person going through a very tough time in her life.”

Salazar said Olmos had been struggling with school, work, and a personal relationship that had recently ended.

“We hope we can expedite that process to be able to get the community answers that everybody’s been waiting for,” Salazar told reporters.

Olmos’ mother previously told authorities that her daughter went missing after leaving home for one of her regular neighborhood walks early on Christmas Eve.

Investigators said Olmos left her cellphone on her bed and only had her car keys and possibly her driver’s license with her.

On Monday, authorities released dashcam video showing someone believed to be Olmos walking near her home around 7 a.m. on Christmas Eve.

Before that footage was made public, investigators said Olmos was also captured on surveillance video at about 7 a.m. searching her car before leaving the house on foot.

At various points during the investigation, authorities expanded the search area, including efforts that extended into Mexico. Officials had also warned earlier in the case that Olmos was believed to be in “imminent danger.”

Salazar urged the public to be mindful of loved ones who may be struggling.

“Check on people,” Salazar said. “Don’t take anything for granted … If you’re going through a crisis yourself, reach out and get help.”

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities await confirmation from the medical examiner.
