President Donald Trump announced that Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA who was assassinated earlier this week, will be honored posthumously with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award.
Speaking on Wednesday, President Trump expressed deep sorrow over Kirk’s death and praised his legacy as one of the most influential conservative leaders of his generation.
“Thank you very much. Before we begin, let me express the horror and grief so many Americans at the heinous assassination of Charlie Kirk, have felt,” Trump said.
“Charlie was a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions and millions of people.”
The President extended condolences to Kirk’s family, singling out his wife and children.
“Our prayers are with his wonderful wife, Eric and his beautiful children, fantastic people they are. We miss him greatly,” Trump stated.
Trump emphasized that Kirk’s legacy would endure, particularly through the young people he inspired.
“Yet I have no doubt that Charlie’s voice and the courage he put into the hearts of countless people, especially young people, will live on,” he said.
The President then made the announcement of the upcoming award.
“I’m pleased to announce that I will soon be awarding Charlie Kirk posthumously the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” Trump declared.
“The date of the ceremony will be announced, and I can only guarantee you one thing, that we will have a very big crowd, very, very big.”

Kirk founded Turning Point USA in 2012 and quickly grew the organization into a national movement focused on mobilizing young conservatives.
His assassination has led to widespread grief and tributes across the country, with political leaders and grassroots activists alike pointing to his significant role in shaping the future of conservative politics.
The White House has not yet announced the date of the ceremony, but President Trump’s remarks made clear that it will serve as a public commemoration of Kirk’s contributions.
The Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural and public endeavors.
President Trump’s tribute and announcement added to the growing calls for Kirk’s legacy to be honored and remembered through the movement he helped build.
