95-Year-Old Nursing Home Resident Fatally Attacks Fellow Patient

A 95-year-old woman with dementia fatally attacked a fellow resident inside a Brooklyn nursing home late Sunday night, striking the victim with a piece of a wheelchair, according to police and law enforcement sources, as reported [1] by The New York Post.

The incident occurred just after 10 p.m. at the Seagate Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on West 29th Street near Surf Avenue in Coney Island.

Authorities said a confrontation broke out between the two women, leading the older resident to grab a piece of metal from a wheelchair and strike the other woman multiple times in the head.

The victim, 89, was found in her bed with a severe head injury and was rushed to NYU Brooklyn Hospital, where she was initially listed in critical condition. She later succumbed to her injuries early Monday morning.

Police confirmed that the 95-year-old woman was transported to Coney Island Hospital for both medical and psychiatric evaluation. At this time, she is not facing criminal charges because of her age and dementia diagnosis, law enforcement sources said.

Police Activity at Cape Canaveral Hospital Saturday night. The Cocoa Beach Police Department was on scene at the hospital investigating a suspicious incident. Also on scene was a heavy presence of BCSO. Fire trucks and ambulances were staged near the hospital on 520.

Neither woman has been publicly identified by authorities.

The metal wheelchair piece allegedly used in the attack was discovered outside the facility Monday afternoon, lying on the pavement behind blue police tape.

Residents and family members expressed concern following the deadly incident. Elaine, a 77-year-old woman leaving the facility after visiting her sister, told The New York Post that she was shaken by the news.

“I’m a nervous wreck for my sister. That could’ve been my sister,” she said. Speaking about the victim, she added, “Her poor family.”

The Seagate Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, a long-term care facility near the Coney Island waterfront, has not released a statement about the attack. The case remains under investigation as authorities review how the altercation escalated and how staff responded.
