A skydiver died Monday morning following a midair collision with another jumper during the Lost Prairie Boogie skydiving festival near Marion, Montana. The incident marks the fourth fatal accident at the event in the past 15 years, as reported [1] by The New York Post.
According to the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office, two skydivers collided during freefall.
One of them was rendered unconscious upon impact. Although the unconscious jumper’s emergency parachute deployed automatically during the descent, the individual sustained fatal injuries during landing and was pronounced dead at the scene.

First responders, who were already on-site as part of the event’s emergency support, attempted to render aid immediately after the jumper landed but were unable to save the individual. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
The second skydiver involved in the collision was able to deploy their parachute and land without serious injury. That individual was evaluated by medical personnel on-site and cleared.
This year’s Lost Prairie Boogie marks the 58th summer the event has been held. Over the last 15 years, it has been hosted by Meadow Peak Skydiving, which has now seen four fatalities during its operation of the event.
In 2019, a Minnesota skydiver died when their parachute malfunctioned. A Washington man was killed in 2011, and in 2010, a Colorado man died after his parachute became tangled during the jump.
Meadow Peak Skydiving released a statement after the latest incident, stating that they are cooperating fully with authorities investigating the fatal collision.

“This is a devastating loss, and our deepest sympathies are with the [parachutist’s] family, friends and the entire sky diving community,” the company said. “Our hearts are broken.”
Organizers emphasized that the company follows the highest standards of skydiving safety protocols and regulations, and expressed their commitment to continuing to work with investigators.
The Lost Prairie Boogie draws hundreds of skydivers each year and is considered one of the most notable events in the skydiving community.
Despite its popularity, the growing number of fatalities has raised some concerns over the risks associated with the sport and the challenges in maintaining safety standards during high-volume events.
Local authorities have not yet released any additional details regarding the investigation.
