Authorities in Arkansas have arrested a suspect in the fatal stabbing of a husband and wife who were attacked while hiking with their two young daughters at Devil’s Den State Park over the weekend, as reported by The New York Post.

The incident prompted a five-day manhunt that concluded with the suspect's capture on Wednesday.

According to a press release from the Arkansas State Police, 28-year-old James Andrew McGann was taken into custody in Springdale, Arkansas.

He has been charged with two counts of capital murder in connection with the deaths of Clinton David Brink, 43, and Cristen Amanda Brink, 41.

The Brinks were hiking with their daughters, ages 7 and 9, on Saturday around 2:30 p.m. when they were assaulted on a trail at the well-known state park in Washington County.

The children escaped the attack without physical harm and reported to authorities that their parents had been stabbed during the hike.

Law enforcement officers launched a search for the suspect, who was initially described as a man wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses, and fingerless weightlifting gloves. The bodies of Clinton and Cristen Brink were discovered on the trail hours after the attack.

McGann is a Former teacher of 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade children.

The motive behind the killings has not yet been made public. Arkansas State Police and other agencies involved in the investigation have not released further details regarding McGann’s connection to the victims or the events leading up to the attack.

“This is a heartbreaking case,” said Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders in a statement following the arrest. “No news can heal the enormous harm done to the Brink family in last weekend’s crime, but this announcement is a comfort and reassurance for our State.”

“If you target innocent people, law enforcement will hunt you down and bring you to justice,” she added.

The Brink family released a statement to local ABC affiliate KHBS/KHOG, saying, “Clinton and Cristen died heroes protecting their little girls, and they deserve justice.”

The Brinks had recently moved to Arkansas from South Dakota. Clinton Brink had been scheduled to begin a new job as a milk delivery driver the Monday following the attack, according to his employer.

Devil’s Den State Park is a popular tourist site in Arkansas, known for its rugged trails, caves, and natural rock formations. The trail where the attack occurred is often frequented by families and outdoor enthusiasts.

James Andrew McGann is currently being held as the investigation continues.
