Authorities say a 61-year-old man is in critical condition after being pulled into an active MRI machine while wearing a large metal necklace at a medical facility on Long Island, as reported by The New York Post.

The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, according to Nassau County Police.

Investigators report that the man, whose name has not yet been released, entered the imaging room while a scan was in progress. Officials say the individual was not authorized to enter the room during the procedure.

Police said the man was wearing a heavy metal necklace at the time, which triggered a powerful magnetic force when he stepped into the room. The strong magnetic field of the MRI machine forcefully drew the necklace—and the man—into the scanner.

The impact caused the man to suffer a medical emergency, authorities confirmed. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Specific details about his injuries have not yet been disclosed.

It is unclear how the man gained access to the restricted area during an active MRI scan. The facility has not issued a statement regarding the incident as of Thursday afternoon.

The machines are highly sensitive to metallic objects, which can become dangerous projectiles if brought into the magnetic field. For this reason, patients and staff are typically required to remove jewelry, watches, and other metal items before entering an MRI suite.
