The incident occurred around 2 p.m. Sunday, when a small brush fire was reported on Canfield Mountain, just outside of Coeur d’Alene. Fire personnel responded to the scene, where they were met with gunfire.
Two firefighters were killed, and a third remains hospitalized in stable condition following surgery.
Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris confirmed during a press briefing Sunday night that the fire had been intentionally set to ambush emergency responders.
“We do believe that the suspect started the fire, and we do believe that it was an ambush and it was intentional,” Norris said. “These firefighters did not have a chance.”
