A Senate hearing on Thursday led by Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) revealed stunning new information about activity within the Department of Energy (DOE) during the final 76 days before President Donald Trump returned to office in January.
Testifying before the Senate, Trump-appointed Energy Secretary Chris Wright disclosed that the DOE’s loan program office issued a staggering $93 billion in loans and commitments during that short period—more than double what was issued in the previous 15 years combined.
“During that short period of time, 76 days, how much taxpayer money went out the door of the Department of Energy?” Sen. Kennedy asked.

“From the loan program office, in loans and commitments, $93 billion. Well over twice as much as in the previous 15 years,” Wright responded.
Kennedy pressed further on how proper vetting could have been completed under such circumstances.
“How do you vet and do due diligence on a loan in 76 days? One loan, much less $93 billion. How do you do it?”
Wright responded, “I think it’s probably pretty clear it wasn’t done in many cases. There’s lots of funds that have gone out the door and commitments that were made from businesses that provided no business plan, no numbers about their own financial solvency.”

Kennedy then asked, “So you’re telling me that the Department of Energy, in the 76-day period, before their boss was gonna leave office, gave or loaned money to entities that had no business plan?”
“Correct,” Wright confirmed.
The revelations prompted concern from Kennedy, who asked if Wright and his team were conducting retroactive reviews of the loans issued during that time frame.
Wright confirmed they were.
“Yes,” Wright said. “My blood pressure is rising right now” based on what his office had uncovered.
He added that some applicants “should be ashamed” of the materials they submitted for massive federal funding.
Kennedy responded, “It’s rare that I’m speechless,” before asking once more if the money was “shoveled out the door” by the outgoing Biden-Harris administration.
“It is correct and distasteful,” Wright replied.
“Confidence undermining.”
Kennedy expressed his frustration with what he called reckless spending.
“They were spending money at the Department of Energy like it was ditchwater! Their budget went from $60 billion to $160 billion since fiscal year 2021. It just sounds to me like there were a lot of people coming to the Department of Energy who had all four feet and their snout in the trough.”
He added, “I hope you’ll turn down the boondoggles and refer the thieves to the Department of Justice.”
“We will indeed,” Wright confirmed.
Kennedy also raised the issue of reducing unnecessary staff within the department, asking Wright how they planned to cut back on waste through internal changes.
Wright responded, “American taxpayers deserve it.”
Kennedy noted that such reductions rarely happen in the federal government, to which Wright replied, “It’s what needs to happen in the federal government.”

Wright added that President Trump had empowered agencies to make structural changes that prioritize efficiency and accountability.

The hearing raised broader concerns about spending practices across the federal government during the transition period, with Wright’s testimony suggesting the Department of Energy may not be the only agency that saw an accelerated flow of funds.
The implications are likely to spark further investigations into how taxpayer money was handled during the final days of the Biden-Harris administration.

All the businesses involved in this activity should be outed and any congressional representation should be identified.

Congress needs to bring in former management and the former Secretary for interviews under oath, they also need to investigate their financial situation for sudden increases in assets .. then prosecute.
