A California man accused of fatally stabbing a man in Sacramento County last weekend had been released from jail just six months earlier under a mental health diversion program, authorities confirmed Tuesday, as reported by The New York Post.

The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Jordan Murray, is now charged with murder in connection to the May 18 killing of a 40-year-old man in the Fair Oaks area, according to a statement from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a report of an assault shortly after 8:00 p.m. on Sunday along Fair Oaks Boulevard. Upon arrival, they found the victim on the ground in a parking lot with multiple stab wounds.

Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined that Murray and the victim had been involved in a physical confrontation earlier in the day.

The fight was initially broken up when the victim walked away, but authorities say he later encountered Murray again, along with one of the individuals from the earlier incident.

At that point, Murray allegedly pulled a knife from his pocket and began swinging it at the victim, ultimately stabbing him in the chest and inflicting what detectives described as a “mortal wound.”

Murray was taken into custody Tuesday morning in South Sacramento County without incident and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail. Jail records show he is being held without bail.

According to the sheriff’s office, Murray had a documented criminal history prior to the stabbing. He was arrested in 2024 for two separate violent robberies—one in May at a Dollar Tree, and another in June at a business in Fair Oaks.

In both cases, Murray allegedly sprayed a store employee in the face with an “unknown caustic chemical” before fleeing the scene. He was ultimately apprehended after the second robbery while riding an electric bicycle.

Despite these incidents, the court granted Murray mental health diversion in November 2024, leading to his release from custody. “Only six months after his release from jail, Murray committed this completely preventable murder,” the sheriff’s office stated.

Now facing charges of murder and felony robbery, in addition to the earlier robbery charges, Murray is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

The name of the victim has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
