Co-host of ABC’s The View, Sunny Hostin, drew attention this week after expressing conflicting opinions about the newly elected Pope Leo XIV during two separate broadcasts just days apart, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

On Friday’s episode of The View, Hostin voiced concerns over the pope’s past remarks on cultural values and sexuality.

Specifically, she referenced a 2012 address Pope Leo gave to bishops in which he reportedly said, “The popular culture fostered sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the gospel,” and cited “the homosexual lifestyle and alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children” as examples.

“I’m a little concerned about this choice for the [LGBT] community,” Hostin said, referring to those comments.

However, by Monday’s broadcast, Hostin had completely shifted her position, citing Pope Leo’s ancestry as the reason for her change in tone.

She referenced the pope’s reported Haitian and Black heritage, highlighting that both of his maternal grandparents were described as Black, Haitian, or of mixed race.

“As it turns out, our new American pope has Haitian and Black roots,” Hostin said. “We actually have a Black pope. It’s like chef’s kiss for me.”

The two segments aired just three days apart, and Hostin did not address the contradiction directly. Instead, she emphasized the significance of Leo XIV’s racial background as a reason to celebrate his election, without revisiting her previous concerns over his past statements.

The contrasting statements have drawn public scrutiny and online commentary, with critics pointing out the inconsistency between her original criticism and her later praise.

Some questioned whether her shift in opinion was based solely on the pope’s racial background rather than on any change in his views or actions.

Pope Leo XIV, who was recently elected to lead the Catholic Church, has yet to address either Hostin’s original concerns or the attention drawn by her reversal.

The Vatican has not commented on the renewed interest in Leo’s past remarks or on discussions regarding his ancestry. As of now, Pope Leo has not made any public statements regarding either topic since his election.

Hostin, a former federal prosecutor, has previously faced criticism for statements made on The View and has not issued any clarification following her two on-air comments regarding Pope Leo.
