An illegal immigrant convicted of killing two 19-year-olds in a high-speed crash on a California freeway is set to be released from prison more than six years early, sparking outrage from the victims’ families and renewed concerns over immigration enforcement, as reported by Fox News.
Oscar Eduardo Ortega-Anguiano, 43, was sentenced in 2022 to 10 years in prison after being found guilty of two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

The crash, which took place in November 2021 on the 405 freeway in Orange County, claimed the lives of Anya Varfolomeev and Nicholay Osokin.
Ortega-Anguiano was reportedly driving drunk and high, reaching speeds near 100 mph when he slammed into the couple’s car, causing it to burst into flames. Both teens were killed at the scene.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) notified the victims’ families of Ortega-Anguiano’s pending release.
The department cited time earned through participation in rehabilitation programs, which allows certain inmates to qualify for earlier parole.

While the official release date and location remain confidential, the release notice reviewed by Fox News indicated Garden Grove as a possible location.
“For safety and security reasons CDCR cannot provide information on an incarcerated person’s release date or location in advance of their release. Incarcerated persons may earn credits for participating in rehabilitative programming, which may move their parole dates to an earlier date,” the department said.
The families of the victims are urging the state to block the release. Anya’s father, Anatoly Varfolomeev, stated:
“It’s disgusting. You have two young, unbelievable future, productive American citizens killed for nothing and that illegal immigrant who already has been deported twice is going to be released again? For what?”
Pavel Osokin, father of Nicholay, echoed the frustration.
“Three years for killing two kids! It’s confusing to me. Why you give them 10 if they’re gonna spend five, and then three? Give them three in the beginning, at least we know what to expect. It’s sort of spitting in my face.”
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on Ortega-Anguiano, requesting custody following his release. However, California’s sanctuary policies have raised questions about whether the state will comply.

CDCR has a history of cooperating with ICE detainers, but uncertainty remains.
According to ICE, Ortega-Anguiano has a long criminal history dating back to 2005, with convictions for burglary, vehicle theft, battery on a spouse, and kidnapping.

He has been deported multiple times, most recently in 2018, and illegally re-entered the United States again afterward.
Border czar Tom Homan stated on Fox News that ICE is committed to enforcing the detainer and taking Ortega-Anguiano into federal custody.

“We will act immediately to detain him upon release and begin the deportation process.”
The families of the victims fear Ortega-Anguiano could again evade deportation and return to the U.S., as he has done before. They are calling for justice and accountability as they continue to grieve the loss of their children.
