During his Tuesday night address to a joint session of Congress, President Donald Trump honored 13-year-old Devarjaye “D.J.” Daniel, a Texas boy battling terminal brain cancer, by making him an honorary agent of the United States Secret Service.

While Republicans gave Daniel a standing ovation and chanted his name, Democrats remained seated during the moment.

Daniel, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2018, has spent the past several years being sworn in by more than 900 law enforcement agencies across the country.

During his speech, Trump highlighted Daniel’s journey and his deep admiration for law enforcement.

“Since that time, D.J. and his dad have been on a quest to make his dream come true.

And D.J. has been sworn in as an honorary law enforcement officer actually a number of times. The police love him. The police departments love him,” Trump said.

The president then turned to Secret Service Director Sean Curran and made a special request.

“Tonight, D.J., we are going to do you the biggest honor of them all. I am asking our new Secret Service Director Sean Curran to officially make you an agent of the United States Secret Service,” Trump announced.

Curran presented Daniel with credentials, and the young boy, dressed in a Houston Police Department uniform, embraced him as the chamber erupted in applause.

However, video footage from the event showed that while Republicans stood in support of Daniel, many Democrats remained seated.

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina took to social media to celebrate the moment.

“WOW. Welcome to the Secret Service, Agent DJ. Who’s cutting onions?” she wrote on X.

Earlier in the night, the address was briefly disrupted when Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas was removed from the House chamber for heckling Trump.

Following the speech, MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace discussed Daniel’s honorary appointment but shifted the conversation to the events of Jan. 6, 2021.

“I think this was a lesson in finding one thing that you let yourself feel. And I let myself feel joy about DJ, and I hope he’s alive for another, you know, 95 years and I hope he lives the life he wants,” Wallace said.

“He wants to be a cop. He knows what he wants to do, and maybe when you have childhood cancer, that crystallizes for you. And I hope he has a long life as a law enforcement officer.”

Wallace then pivoted to discussing the Capitol riot, saying, “But I hope he never has to defend the United States Capitol against Donald Trump’s supporters, and if he does, I hope he isn’t one of the six who loses his life to suicide, and I hope he isn’t one who has to testify against the people who carried out acts of seditious conspiracy and then lived to see Donald Trump pardon those people.”

Despite the MSNBC host’s remarks, Trump’s gesture to honor Daniel was widely praised, particularly among law enforcement circles.

Daniel, who attended the speech with his father, Theodis Daniel, continues to receive recognition for his strength and commitment to law enforcement as he battles his illness.
