The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has opened an investigation into former Director James Comey over allegations that he authorized a covert operation targeting Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.

The development follows the recent appointment of Kash Patel as FBI Director.

According to a report by The Washington Times, an FBI whistleblower came forward with claims that in 2015, Comey approved an operation involving two undercover female agents.

These agents, referred to as “honeypots,” were allegedly tasked with infiltrating Trump’s campaign to uncover potentially damaging information.

A “honeypot” is a term in intelligence circles for an operative who pretends to have romantic or sexual interest in a target to extract information.

The whistleblower alleges that Comey personally directed this effort despite the absence of a predicated criminal investigation, suggesting the operation was an attempt to find wrongdoing within Trump’s campaign.

The whistleblower further stated that the two female undercover agents were embedded at senior levels within Trump’s campaign.

The disclosure, reviewed by The Washington Times, suggests that under the new leadership of Director Patel and Deputy Director Dan Bongino, the FBI is working to locate the former undercover employees who reportedly carried out Comey’s orders.

This revelation stands in contrast to the well-documented Crossfire Hurricane investigation, which focused on allegations of collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia.

The whistleblower, who claims to have direct knowledge of Comey’s actions, asserts that the former director personally directed the covert effort against Trump.

Additionally, the whistleblower indicated that the operation was not disclosed to Justice Department Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz, who later conducted an extensive review of FBI misconduct related to the Trump campaign investigation.

According to the disclosure, “The case had no predicated foundation, so Comey personally directed the investigation without creating an official case file in Sentinel or any other FBI system.”

The whistleblower further noted that while the FBI has classified procedures for handling sensitive cases, Comey’s failure to officially document the operation raised significant concerns.

Prior to the 2024 election, Comey publicly expressed apprehension about Trump’s potential reelection, warning about the president’s stance toward government institutions.

“Trump is coming for those institutions. He knows their power and I think he has regrets that he didn’t work hard enough to corrupt them last time. So he’s coming for them and that’s a danger for all Americans,” Comey stated during an interview with MSNBC.

Christopher Wray, who served as FBI Director after Comey, stepped down on January 19, one day before Trump was sworn in as the 47th president.

Wray’s tenure included multiple investigations involving Trump, and he faced criticism from congressional Republicans for missing an oversight hearing due to what was later revealed to be a vacation.

In February, the Justice Department brought charges of “insubordination” against members of the FBI’s acting leadership in a separate investigation into the alleged misuse of law enforcement under Joe Biden.

Patel is expected to work alongside Attorney General Pam Bondi to address these concerns.

The investigation into Comey’s alleged operation will examine the extent of the surveillance and the decision-making processes behind it.
