Noem’s confirmation follows a smooth process, with no major obstacles during her hearing.
The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee advanced her nomination earlier by a 13–2 vote, with only two Democrats opposing her at that stage.
Kristi Noem’s confirmation marks the fourth cabinet position filled under the Trump administration, following Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.
As the new head of DHS, Noem will oversee a department central to the administration’s priorities, including border security, immigration enforcement, and counterterrorism efforts.
The Trump administration has emphasized securing the southern border as a key objective.
Recent actions include resuming construction of the border wall, deploying military personnel to assist with border enforcement, and ending Biden-era parole programs.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has also launched nationwide deportation operations as part of what Trump has described as a “historic” effort to curb illegal immigration.
During her confirmation hearing, Noem outlined her vision for the department, emphasizing border security as a primary focus.
“As a nation, we have the right and the responsibility to secure our borders against those who would do us harm,” she stated.
“We must create a fair and lawful immigration system that is efficient, effective, and reflects our values.”
She also highlighted other critical areas within the DHS mission, including cybersecurity, disaster relief, and counterterrorism.
“We must be vigilant, proactive, and innovative to protect the homeland,” Noem said, stressing the importance of safeguarding critical infrastructure and responding to natural disasters and security threats.
Noem addressed questions during her hearing about how she would work with Tom Homan, who has been designated as the administration’s border czar to lead deportation efforts.
