Robert F. Kennedy Jr. appeared before the Senate Finance Committee on Wednesday for his confirmation hearing as Secretary of Health and Human Services in the Trump administration.
The hearing, meant to assess his qualifications for the role, quickly turned into a tense exchange as Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) pressed Kennedy on healthcare and vaccine-related issues.
During the questioning, Sanders attempted to corner Kennedy on the topic of healthcare as a "human right."
Kennedy, however, did not provide the answer Sanders was looking for, leading the Vermont senator to interrupt him and attempt to move on.

Kennedy explained the difference between constitutionally protected rights, such as free speech, and government-funded healthcare.
"It's different because free speech costs nothing. In health care—if you smoke cigs for 20 years, and you get cancer—you are now taking from the pool of resources," Kennedy stated.
Sanders pushed back, citing other countries that provide government-funded healthcare.
However, the debate was cut short as Sanders moved to his next line of attack.
RFK just gave a flawless answer to Bernie Sanders asking if health care is a human right.
Bet Sanders didn't expect an answer this intelligent... he interrupted RFK IMMEDIATELY. SANDERS: Is it a human right? Yes or no? RFK: In the way that free speech is? It's different,… pic.twitter.com/JR9UpdAB0A — Eric Daugherty (@EricLDaugh) January 29, 2025

The senator then shifted to a personal critique of Kennedy, focusing on onesies produced by an organization Kennedy had previously been involved with.
The baby clothing in question featured phrases such as "Unvaxxed Unafraid" and "No Vax, No Problem." Sanders demanded to know if Kennedy supported the messages printed on the garments.
"Are you supportive of these onesies?" Sanders shouted.
Kennedy, maintaining his composure, responded, "I'm supportive of vaccines."
Sanders, appearing unsatisfied, raised his voice again: "Are you supportive of this clothing which is militantly anti-vaccine?"
Kennedy reiterated his position, stating, "I'm supportive of vaccines... I want good science."
Despite Kennedy clarifying that he was no longer part of the organization that produced the onesies, Sanders continued his aggressive questioning, repeatedly raising concerns about the group's messaging.

Many found the exchange bizarre, noting that Sanders continued pressing Kennedy over something he had no control over.
