Donald Trump is projected to become the 47th president of the United States, completing a historic political comeback with a decisive Electoral College lead over Kamala Harris.

NATIONAL HARBOR, MD, USA- February 24, 2024: Donald Trump speaks at CPAC about his plan for defeating current President Joe Biden in November.

Early Wednesday, Decision Desk HQ called the race for Trump, who captured essential swing states, including Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Trump’s lead in these battlegrounds brought his electoral count to 286, surpassing the 270 needed for victory.

“This is a moment like no other in this country, maybe even beyond,” Trump declared to a cheering crowd at the Palm Beach County Convention Center, near his Mar-a-Lago residence.

“We’re going to help our country heal, and it needs help very badly. We’re going to fix our borders … fix everything about our country.”

Surrounded by family members and supporters, Donald Trump makes his acceptance speech at his Election Night Watch Party at the Palm Beach County Convention Center after being elected the 47th President of the United States November 5, 2024.

Trump, 78, ran a campaign heavily focused on economic recovery, energy independence, and border security, themes that resonated with his white, rural, and working-class base.

His support also grew among ethnic minorities, contributing to his victories in key regions.

Harris maintained strong support in urban centers like Philadelphia and Atlanta, but Trump’s ability to connect with suburban and rural voters ultimately gave him the edge.

The Republican victory extended beyond the presidential race, with the GOP projected to regain control of the Senate after four years in the minority.

The House of Representatives remained too close to call as of Wednesday morning, with results expected in the coming days.

In an unexpected outcome, Trump was also poised to win the popular vote, potentially ending a two-decade losing streak for Republican candidates in raw vote totals.

Crowds of Harris supporters gathered at Howard University, her alma mater, and were visibly stunned as it became apparent she would not clinch the presidency.

Campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond addressed the disappointed crowd, saying, “We still have votes to count … so you won’t hear from the vice president tonight. She will be back here tomorrow.”

Trump’s campaign targeted a range of voters, with a particular emphasis on male voters and a rigorous schedule of rallies and media appearances in battleground states.

Meanwhile, Harris avoided focusing on her potential to make history as the first female president and instead presented herself as a champion of small business and middle-class Americans, steering away from her previous progressive stances.

Trump’s victory marks him as only the second president in U.S. history to win non-consecutive terms, a feat previously achieved by Democrat Grover Cleveland in the late 19th century.

Leading up to Election Day, exit polls indicated that Americans were seeking substantial change, with top concerns around economic strain and immigration.

Trump’s final appeals to voters centered on these issues, with his promises to “fight for you, for your family and your future… every single day” resonating across diverse voting groups.

Both Trump and Harris entered the race with a unique form of incumbency: Trump as a former president seeking a second term, and Harris stepping into the race after Joe Biden announced in July that he would not seek reelection.

Biden’s own role in the race included appearances that sometimes stirred controversy, including remarks critical of Trump’s supporters and a comment suggesting Trump should be “locked up” politically.

As the campaign concluded, Trump’s path to victory faced significant challenges, including multiple criminal indictments and several assassination attempts, one at a Butler, Pennsylvania, rally in July and another at his West Palm Beach golf course in September.

Meanwhile, his campaign managed to attract funding from unexpected sources, including former Democrat donors like Elon Musk and Bill Ackman, who contributed substantially to Trump’s campaign efforts.

Harris secured the Democratic nomination in August following efforts by party leaders to steer Biden away from a second term.

Her campaign broke fundraising records, surpassing $1 billion from July to September, allowing her to target ads that positioned her as a moderate.

However, Trump’s messaging on border control, energy, and international stability appeared to resonate strongly with voters, carrying him to a decisive win in an election marked by intense focus on national issues.
