According to the Haiti National Office of Civil Aviation, Spirit Airlines Flight 951 was targeted by gunfire as it approached the airport.

One flight attendant was grazed by a bullet, and footage captured by local outlet Media Libre Haiti showed multiple bullet holes in the plane’s overhead bins and a door.

After the attack, the plane was diverted and safely landed in Santiago, Dominican Republic, where the injured flight attendant was treated for minor injuries. No other passengers were reported injured.

The attack comes just two weeks after Spirit Airlines temporarily suspended its flights to Haiti’s capital due to a separate security incident in which gang members reportedly opened fire and struck a United Nations helicopter near the airport.

The airline has since announced that it will be suspending all services to both Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien International Airport (CAP) due to the worsening conditions.

Spirit Airlines issued a statement emphasizing that “the safety of our guests and team members is a priority.” The airline has taken the damaged aircraft out of service as it assesses the situation.

This latest incident highlights the increasing violence and instability in Haiti, where gang activity has significantly impacted infrastructure and daily life.

In response to the worsening security conditions, the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince issued a statement warning travelers about the dangers of entering and moving around in Haiti.

The Embassy noted, “The security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” and cautioned that “the U.S. government cannot guarantee your safety traveling to airports, borders, or during any onward travel.”

The statement urged U.S. citizens to assess their personal security before considering travel in or out of Haiti.

In light of the escalating security concerns, other airlines have also suspended their services to Haiti. American Airlines and JetBlue both announced on November 14 that they would be halting flights to the country, joining Spirit Airlines in temporarily pulling back operations.

The incident underscores the risks associated with traveling to Haiti amid a surge in gang violence, which has disrupted essential services and created hazardous conditions, even for international air traffic.

The U.S. government continues to advise travelers to avoid unnecessary travel to Haiti and to take serious precautions if travel is unavoidable.
