Peanut the Squirrel, a well-known internet pet with a significant following, was euthanized this week by New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) after being seized from his home, according to a report from WETM.

Peanut, also known as “P’Nut” on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, was a seven-year-old rescue squirrel.

He and a raccoon named Fred were reportedly put down to test for rabies, according to a statement from the agency.

Peanut’s guardian, Mark Longo, shared the news on social media, posting a heartfelt video memorial for his pet. Accompanied by his girlfriend, Longo said through tears, “Peanut was the best thing that ever happened to us.”

In a message on Instagram, Longo wrote, “RIP MY BEST FRIEND. Thank you for the best 7 years of my life. Thank you for bringing so much joy to us and the world. I’m sorry I failed you but thank you for everything.”

Longo also called for financial help from fans to assist in a “legal battle” and support his nonprofit, P’Nut’s Freedom Farm.

According to the DEC’s statement, Peanut reportedly bit an investigator on the hand while being removed from Longo’s home in Elmira, prompting the need to test for rabies. “In addition, a person involved with the investigation was bitten by the squirrel,” the statement said. “To test for rabies, both animals were euthanized. The animals are being tested for rabies, and anyone who has been in contact with these animals is strongly encouraged to consult their physician.”

Peanut had been rescued by Longo years ago after he saw the squirrel’s mother killed by a car in Connecticut.

Peanut’s personality and charm led Longo to relocate to upstate New York, where he started “P’Nut’s Freedom Farm,” a small sanctuary dedicated to animal rescue.

The removal of Peanut and Fred came after multiple complaints were filed anonymously about wild animals living in Longo’s residence.

Following the animals’ seizure, Longo addressed the situation in a social media post, stating, “Well internet, you WON. You took one of the most amazing animals away from me because of your selfishness.” He continued, “To the group of people who called DEC, there’s a special place in hell for you.”

DEC confirmed that the investigation was initiated in response to complaints regarding the presence of rabies-vector species in the home, specifically naming Fred the raccoon.

The incident has sparked a public outcry among fans of Peanut, who had gained a substantial online following for his friendly demeanor and interactions with Longo, which were widely shared across social media platforms.

Longo’s supporters continue to express their sympathy, with many contributing to his nonprofit and supporting his legal efforts as he navigates the aftermath of Peanut’s passing.
