Former ICE Director Tom Homan, speaking on Donald Trump Jr.’s podcast Triggered, called for the designation of the Sinaloa cartel as a terrorist organization.

Homan argued that the cartel, which operates in over 40 countries and has deeply infiltrated the United States, poses a greater threat to American lives than any other terrorist group in history.

Tom Homan, former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, at the 2024 Conservative Political Action Conference.

He expressed confidence that President-elect Donald Trump would take decisive action to address the crisis if returned to office.

“The cartels are like a Fortune 500 company, the Sinaloa cartels,” Homan explained. “They’re in over 40 countries on the globe. Not only are they smuggling record monthly narcotics into the United States, they are now in every major city in the United States, taking all the distribution within the United States.”

Homan emphasized the staggering toll the cartel has taken on American lives, citing the devastating impact of fentanyl and other narcotics. “The criminal cartels in Mexico have killed more Americans than every terrorist organization in the world combined. Take 9/11 and multiply that by 100,” he said.

He highlighted Trump’s commitment to confronting the cartel threat, noting, “President Trump says he’s going to designate them as a terrorist organization, wipe them off the face of the earth, because Mexico’s not going to do it.”

Homan criticized the Mexican government and military for failing to combat the cartels effectively, pointing to widespread corruption. “Mexico has been dealing with this for 30 years, and I hate to say it, but it’s just a fact. Much of the Mexican military, much of the Mexican government, they’re corrupt. We know that,” he said.

“Not every cop and soldier is corrupt, but many of them are. If you’re a police officer making $36 a week, and the cartel offers you $100,000 to look the other way, many will take it.”

To dismantle the cartel operations, Homan advocated for the United States to take the lead, leveraging its military and intelligence capabilities. “It’s going to take U.S. Special Operations, U.S. intelligence to track these guys down, follow the money, and just do the same thing President Trump did with ISIS and the caliphate,” he said.

“He can do it. He did that. There’s no reason he can’t do it with the criminal cartels.”
