In a bold move sure to stir debate in Washington, President-elect Donald Trump has chosen former Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard as his Director of National Intelligence.

Gabbard, once a Democratic candidate for president, has since shifted allegiances, leaving the Democratic Party in 2022 and aligning herself with conservative values, often publicly supporting Trump, as reported by The New York Times.

Trump praised Gabbard’s patriotism and conviction, stating, “For over two decades, Tulsi has fought for our Country and the Freedoms of all Americans. As a former Candidate for the Democrat Presidential Nomination, she has broad support in both Parties - She is now a proud Republican!”

Trump expressed confidence that Gabbard’s “fearless spirit” would lead the intelligence community with a commitment to “championing our Constitutional Rights” and “securing Peace through Strength.”

As an Iraq War veteran and a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve, Gabbard brings a unique perspective to the intelligence role. Her consistent criticism of both Republican and Democratic foreign policy strategies has been vocal, particularly against what she sees as wasteful “regime-change wars.”

While in Congress, she stood out for her willingness to challenge Obama administration policies, especially its interventions in the Middle East. This stance brought her sharp criticism, especially after her meeting with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in 2017, which stirred controversy given Assad's human rights record.

Gabbard’s nomination, alongside Trump’s choice of John Ratcliffe for CIA Director, underscores Trump’s intent to build an intelligence team that questions the long-held interventionist strategies. Gabbard, known for her outspoken criticism of the “military-industrial complex,” joins an administration that shares her skepticism about endless foreign interventions.

Before her shift to conservative principles, Gabbard made waves in the 2020 Democratic primary. During a heated debate, she took aim at Kamala Harris, particularly criticizing Harris’s record on marijuana laws. This moment resonated with Trump’s base and highlighted Gabbard’s willingness to call out her own party.
